The AGM Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Coiste Mhaigh Eo was held in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, recently and all branches in the county were well represented. 2012 was a very successful year for Comhaltas in Mayo and many achievements were recorded.

Mayo AC celebrated their 25th Anniversary in style at a party night in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar at the start of the month. A broad spectrum of members from the early days of the late '80s to the present time were among those enjoying the celebrations. It was a wonderful opportunity for old friends and rivals to meet again, run down memory lane, mix with the post millennium intake, and share training methods from the days of hand-written results sheets to today's racing menu where it's chips with everything. In tandem with the club's success, membership has grown from 30 odd in 1999 to over 140 in 2012.

It was another winning weekend for Mayo AC over the Galway border. The Clarinbridge Charity 10k had more than 300 finishers led home by Steve McKeigue from Ferbane AC in 33:17 on a demanding course which included some 3km of forest trail. Mayo AC's Paddy O'Toole was third in 34:59, and TJ McHugh fifth overall in 36:05. Catherine Conway was fourth overall and first woman in a brilliant personal best time of 36:03. This was just one second better than her 36:04 second place at the Athenry 10k in Jan 2010.

Michael Duffy earned a spot in the midfield three with Brendan Lavelle picking up his award in the front line. The last spot on the team went to Castlebar Celtic’s Ger O’Boyle whose good form saw him called up to the Irish junior side, before cruelly picking up an injury just before the game.

The annual dinner dance will be held in the Welcome Inn Hotel, on Friday November 9 at 8pm.

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane is calling on the people of Castlebar to get out in support of the Ballyhea Bondholder Bailout Protest Group who will be marching in Castlebar on Saturday next. Since March 2011, this group have marched every Sunday without fail in Ballyhea, a small rural Cork village, to show their opposition and outrage at the indebting of the Irish people following the bank bailout.
